WYSIWYG Content Editor

Overview

Insight uses an online text/HTML editor to place and edit content. WYSIWYG is shorthand for "What You See Is What You Get". This editor becomes available whenever you're prompted to create text and submit it in your course. For example, when you create a wikipage you see the editor. To respond to a discussion forum or to type a response to an online assignment, you will see the text/HTML editor as well.

The editor looks like this:

You can use the editor tools by clicking the buttons, much like you do in MS Word. When you hover your mouse cursor over a button, a pop-up message will appear describing what the button does. These buttons include functions that allow text input, font and size selection, text color and type, indentation and justification for example. You can also use it to include links and images in your response.

EDITOR LIMITATIONS AND ACCESSIBILITY

The editor does NOT work with certain browsers - such as Apple's Safari. CCSF supports and recommends the Firefox web-browser for use with Insight.

The editor does NOT work with accessibility support software, either. Those users using Dragon Naturally Speaking or JAWS to view their course content will need to edit their user profile and in their profile, for the option of "When editing text" choose "Use standard web forms". This provides these users with the ability to enter text-only in their response.

MOODLE + BROWSER LIMITATIONS

Moodle has a refresh limitation in that any changes that you make to your course when either uploading files or using the WYSIWYG/HTML editor may not appear instantly until you hard refresh your browser. This is done by either holding down the "Control" and "R" keys together in the browser window on a PC or by holding down the "Apple" and "R" keys together on a Mac to refresh the current web page you are viewing.

Additionally, there is a browser timeout factor - so, if you are either editing or creating text using the WYSIWYG/HTML editor - in ANY tool (forum post/reply, online typing assignment, building a wiki page, etc.) - PLEASE SAVE YOUR WORK FREQUENTLY - every 5 to 10 minutes should prevent much frustration on your part.
